Artwork Requirements

Burnie Print 'n' Design accept artwork on CD, USB thumb drives, most camera memory cards or via email. Email attachments should not be larger than 10mb.

All our page layout work is done in Adobe InDesign. Most Quark and Pagemaker documents will open in InDesign.

We prefer all artwork to be supplied as high quality pdf files.

Bleed

All artwork requiring bleed must be supplied with at least 2mm bleed on all sides.

Microsoft Office (Word, Publisher, Excel or Powerpoint)

We accept work done in Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel or Powerpoint but artwork done in these programs can result in extra artwork fees.

Fonts

If you use unusual fonts, these should be supplied separately. If not, our system may subsitute fonts and give an an undesirable result.

Hardcopy

Please supply a hardcopy of the files, printed from your computer – we can compare this with what we see on our computers to ensure they are the same.

Graphics

Please read the graphics information below. If you have low resolution graphics in your documents, they may not reproduce well.

Photos, Clipart and Logos

Before sending us your artwork, please note that a photograph or other image needs a resolution of just 72 dpi (dots per inch) to display properly on a computer monitor. However, our high resolution printing presses require images at around 300 dpi - anything less may print with a pixilated 'jaggy' look. Please check the resolution of your images carefully - just because they look good on screen doesn't mean they'll print properly!

Digital Photos

Digital photos should be supplied in digital format either via email, CD or USB jump drives. They should be provided at the highest quality setting with no compression. Digital photos should not be resized using computer software, but supplied at the orginal size. The bigger the digital image you can provide, the better the final print will be.

Logos

Client logos should preferably be supplied digitally as vector graphics (.eps or .ai formats) with all fonts outlined. We can work with jpg images, but the quality may be reduced.

Colours

Photos or images that are going to press should be CMYK (this is not important if your work is going to be digitally photocopied). Images supplied in RGB may produce unexpected or undesired results.

Spot colours should be specified as PMS colours. Colours should not be supplied as CMYK percentages, as these may not reproduce in the exact colour desired.

Web Graphics

Please note that graphics sourced from internet sites are usually low resolution and do not reproduce well on the printing press. Sometimes these images have surprisingly good results when printed digitally or on our large format printer, but if they are required to go to the printing press, they may give unsatisfactory results.

It is the clients responsibility to check copyright restrictions on web graphics.

Scanning

If you wish to scan your own photos, please note the following requirements:

  • Photos must be scanned at the actual final print size at 300dpi. Scanning photos at a lower resolution will result in smaller photos or low quality images
  • Save scans as .jpg at the highest quality with no compression.
  • Lineart (text, drawings) should be scanned at 1200 dpi.
If providing photos for Burnie Print 'n' Design to scan, please ensure they are high quality gloss photos. Printouts of digital photos do not reproduce well – for best results please provide the original digital photo.
